Big I CT Commits to Flood Insurance Awareness, But Opposes New Mandate
Flood insurance awareness campaign, yes!
Mandated signatures declining flood insurance, no!
That was the message Big I CT delivered to the Connecticut General Assembly Environment Committee during testimony on two bills that would impose more paperwork and signature requirements on customers and agents. Section 1(a) of S.B. 9 and S.B. 1245 mandates that insurance agents and brokers obtain a written acknowledgment from insurance applicants regarding their:
- Receipt of a disclosure regarding the availability of flood insurance, and
- whether the applicant declines to purchase flood insurance for their property.
Travis Wattie, AVP of Government Relations, shared that while well-intentioned, the proposal increases customer burden, taxes already constrained agency resources, and ignores the diminishing effectiveness of additional paperwork and signatures in the insurance education process.
Big I CT made a commitment to collaborate with stakeholders and support a broader public awareness campaign but emphasized that this proposal was not the answer to increasing the use of flood insurance. View the live testimony below (6:54 mark).
THANK YOU to members who have participated in a Call To Action opposing Section 1(a). Big I CT members with an office or residence in the district of an Environment Committee member were asked to use the new VoterVoice tool to deliver a pre-drafted message to lawmakers. While the current grassroots strategy focuses on the committee, all members are welcome to participate. Please visit the Big I CT Grassroots Action Center to make your voice heard.
