State Launches New Tool For Assessing Climate Risk

Connecticut residents and businesses can estimate their threats from natural disasters using a tool unveiled by the state government today. Gov. Ned Lamont and Insurance Commissioner Andrew Mais announced the new online risk mapping tool in a September 30 news release.

The Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) and First Street collaborated to build the tool. First Steet is a company that gathers and analyzes data on physical risks from climate change. According to the release, “By simply entering an address, homeowners and businesses can immediately see their property’s exposure to a range of climate-related risks such as flooding, wildfire, hurricane winds, extreme heat and air quality.”

The release said that Connecticut is the only state making this type of resource available to all residents. It may give homeowners and businesses a better idea of their insurance needs. Big I Connecticut members might want to consider informing their clients about its availability.
