Is Your Property Prepared for Extreme Weather?

Weather resilience strategies can help you mitigate the impacts of damage to your property.

Climate change has increased the likelihood and severity of catastrophic weather events. Droughts, wildfires, hurricanes, and more are becoming more frequent, presenting new levels of risk and increasing insured property losses.
While you can’t control the weather, you can reduce the impacts of climate change on your property. Here’s how you can make sure you’re prepared and protected.

Are You Covered?

Check your policies to see if you’re covered for all kinds of extreme weather. According to the Fifth National Climate Assessment, flooding in the Northeast has increased by 60% since the 1950s – the highest of all regions in the U.S. Keep in mind that flood damage isn’t included in a standard home policy and will have to be purchased separately.

If it’s helpful, you can also review your policies with your agent to better understand the features of your coverage and policy deductibles. For example, some policies have a special deductible for losses caused by named storms, like hurricanes, or for wind damage.

Invest in Technology

Shutoff valves, sensors, and other prediction and prevention technologies can stop a disaster before any serious damage is done. Consider implementing these tools to stay one step ahead of potential losses.

Home Improvement

Before a storm hits, take a walk around your property and take stock of its condition. Is the roof in good shape? Are the gutters clear of debris? Are there any loose items, like lawn furniture, that could cause damage to your home during extreme weather? Check out these hurricane preparedness recommendations for more ways to secure your home.
